The magic starts with a little wooden doll. When the young Clara falls asleep, suddenly visions of sugarplums are no longer dreams. Dancing snowflakes dazzle her eyes. Toy soldiers come to life and battle the evil, Mouse Queen! Enter into the Land of Sweets and come see Central Ohio Youth Ballet's The Nutcracker, Thanksgiving weekend. The magic is ever expanding: now with new costumes, backdrops, and choreography! Come dream with us!
The Nutcracker has been a holiday tradition in Central Ohio for more than two decades. Due to the small cast size, COYB only performed Act II of The Nutcracker for their debut performance in 2005. The overwhelming demand for tickets, necessitated the addition of 2 shows to the originally planned 2 performances in the 225 seat venue that year. Encouraged by the eagerness of the community, the fledgling troupe sought to give their audience what they wanted by performing at the 1200 seat Newark High School Auditorium the following year. Nonetheless, they found themselves in a similar situation with sold out shows. COYB continued to present an ever evolving full-length performance of The Nutcracker at NHS until 2000, when they were invited to bring their production to The Historic Midland Theatre in downtown Newark. This partnership with The Midland as part of their Family Series brings performance opportunities for young dancers to our community.
